NEW! Cowan Family Tree 2008

Hello and Welcome to the Cowan Family History Project for 2008!

Firstly I would like to apologize for taking so long to get the family tree back online. In addition to a prolonged illness, it has taken me some time to bring our genealogy information into a format that was safe to edit. After converting the old 2003 data into GEDCOM format, I discovered many errors, either in the original document or in due the translation, that required manual repair. Carefully pruning a cryptic, 100,000 line file for logical inconsitencies is no easy task, and if it weren't done properly we would have a significant amount of information

That being said, the information here contains errors. I need your help. Please take the time to look through the website and verify the information on your relatives and ancestors is correct!

Scanning through the data there are obvious glitches here and there. Also, when reparing the tree I had to make a number of decisions to prune some information. There are a number of people (about 60) who I have made manual changes for, and these people require careful attention. Please take a look at the Help Wanted page to ensure the information on these relatives is correct. I'm looking forward for all those new birth announcements for my cousins!

About the Cowan Family History Project

Trevor Bradley has taken on this enormous project, building on the incredible work of Dalton Read and Rosalie Morris in 2003. There are more than 7,200 people in the Cowan Family History Project, However information is missing and some of the information requires further verification.

I would like someone from each family to take a few minutes and put together the following information and e-mail it to Trevor Bradley.

  1. Full name, identifying commonly used names and appropriate nicknames, with attention to spelling and clarity of script.
  2. Relation to existing people in the Family History Project (links to the website help)
  3. Date of birth (and place if possible)
  4. Date of death (location of interment if possible)
  5. Date and place of marriage and above information for the spouse (It's also nice to include spouse's parent info)
  6. When there are multiple spouses, the identification of a primary spouse (e.g. childbearing spouse, current spouse, etc.), date of divorce, etc is helpful.
  7. As much of the above information as possible on parents, grandparents, great grandparents.
  8. The source of each piece of information (ex. "Newspaper clipping", "Family bible", "letter", "photo", etc.....including date [at least year] of the source). Please do offer your own memories & views as well, but please note/reference such entries as "memories" or "guess".
  9. It will be appreciated if you begin sending the information "sooner rather than later". Please send all information to tgb@sfu.ca or the address below.
  10. I may need to e-mail or call you to verify conflicting information.

If you have certificates, historical documents, deeds, news clippings, obituaries, wedding announcements, anniversaries, graduations, or information on community events involving any of our ancestors, we would appreciate it if you would send scanned copies to Trevor Bradley. I will do my best to see that the documents are included on the web site. Bring your originals to the reunion to be displayed. We would also like it if you could take the time to write some of your own memories of people, places, events, traditions and occupations of the past. Please consider taking the time to interview a senior member of the family about their lives. Let's seize this opportunity to share, and pass on memories to our grandchildren.
